Mathematics
Mathematics is key to developing problem solving and logical thinking skills.
Our classrooms all have interactive whiteboards and our experienced teachers use a blend of modern and traditional teaching methods to engage students. The National Curriculum forms the basis of what we teach but we aim to broaden and extend students with problem solving activities.
Students are not set in Year 7 and for the majority of the first year they work without a calculator, improving their already strong numerical skills. Students are loosely set from Years 8 to 11, with all students working towards Higher GCSE at the end of Year 11. Up to 60 students in the express sets sit the Additional Maths qualification alongside GCSE in Year 11.
Maths is the most popular A-Level choice with over two thirds of our students studying Mathematics A-Level. In Year 13 about 30 students study Further Mathematics A-Level or AS Level. All Maths A-Levels are sat in Year 13.
All students in Years 8 and 10 sit the UKMT challenges, with many progressing to the follow-on rounds, including the Olympiad. In Years 12 and 13 many of our A-Level students sit the Senior Maths Challenge. The MOG (Maths Olympiad for Girls) is taken by our keenest mathematicians.
Interhouse maths competitions are run for KS3 and KS4. We send teams to compete in the UKMT Maths Team Challenges, the Maths Feast and Hans Woyda.
Many of our students go on to study maths or maths-related degrees at university level.
