The Classics Department at The Tiffin Girls’ School aims to challenge students in the most imaginative ways possible. We aim to introduce new ideas and new languages and to encourage students to think for themselves and make critical judgements in a balanced way.

Students in Years 7-13 study Latin. Year 10 students have the option of a beginners’ class in Attic Greek (5th Century), intended to lead to the possibility of a summer school place and a GCSE in Year 12. Greek is an off-timetable course, studied in lunch hours.

Classics students are challenged to study hard and to think for themselves. They take the best of the past and use it to forge their future. Classicists learn to use languages in more flexible and interesting ways, working as a team and alone. Students are inspired and guided to a lifelong learning journey. The recognised academic rigour of these subjects gives university and job applications a very real credibility. Classical subjects are comparatively rare features on UCAS applications, especially from state-funded schools. This means that Latin or Greek give distinction to any application.
